How Low will I go?

In the interest of seeing just how wide spread the use of DAM systems had become, I paid a trip to San Franciscoıs Public Utilities. Some people there - Yan Chao and Greg Braswell - have been developing a digital camera ³dump² tool. It seems the uneven sidewalk and pot hole complaints are documented by inspectors in the field with digital cameras and the management of these images was proving cumbersome. While solving this problem, Yan and Greg also wanted to create a simple tool which would download images from the camera in an orderly manner and could be used for many applications .So far for the inspectors they have developed a tool to view, rename and resize digital camera images and insert them into the database managing their reports.

They have created this software tool using Microsoftıs ActiveX Control with a minimum of parameters. It treats the camera as a remote storage device. An inspector opens his report which is maintained in SQL server software. He then accesses the camera with the ³dump² tool. It views the images, renaming them with a date. The inspector then selects the images he wishes to keep which are resized and placed in the database. They are still at the development stage, caught between customizing it for this one group and keeping it as a generic tool to be plugged into custom situations, but it is looking interesting and would work with any MS database. They are eager to talk with anyone else and exchange code. Drop me an email - Gert@dig-mar.com and Iıll connect you.
