Adobe improves upon Acrobat

What could Adobe find to add to the new version 5 of Acrobat? Well for those of you who are getting sent acrobat files as resources, you will now be able to export both images and text from PDF files and save them in an usable format such as TIFF or JPEG. However for those who like the way acrobat protects your images and text, you can also control the extraction, by specifying such factors as resolution and compression level. Of interest to those futurist among Acrobat 5 will also support The Extended Markup Language (XML). It will both recognize and save out XML metadata and structure. XML is coming on albeit slowly, but inevitably, Acrobat 5 is here!

Want to check your Toner while on the road?

Hewlett-Packard is promoting a new line of Internet-enabled laser printers. The four new models, priced at $399 to $1,099, allow users to beam documents for printing from wireless devices, check the paper and toner levels of individual printers from a Web page and scan documents directly onto the Internet. Connected to my printer....I donıt know about that.

ICE cubed?

Anyone buying new film scanners has probably been running into the term - digital ICE. What does it mean? A firm called Applied Science Fiction is responsible for the naming of these nifty scanning tools which most scanner manufacturers are now including with their equipment. The original Digital ICE stands for Image Correction and Enhancement. It makes the scratches go away. Unfortunately with some fine line images such as engravings or drawings, it does too good a job. Fortunately on the Nikon 2000 you can turn it off. To this product AFS has added two other tools ROC and GEM to ³cube² the Ice. ROC - Reconstruction Of Color - uses programed knowledge of different films to recreate what the film would have looked like when it was new. GEM - Grain Equalization Management - identifies the grain in the scan and removes it like ICE does the scratches. With Ice-cubed you can make your old beat up images look new again.

So far it is a big secret.

HEARD IN THE ALLEY

Software Seer Bids to Change the Desktop

David Gelernter who wrote ''Mirror Worlds'' which predicted the Web is concerned about the overwhelming stream of information now flowing through the pipelines. He poises the question - why do we still organize our information as if it were on paper in folders and virtual file cabinets? He wants to stretch your mind more with organizing chronologically, streaming data . Now I have to admit I am not sure that my mind is flexible enough to understand how it works, but his company, Mirror World Technologies is offering Scopeware, on which you can search by time or keyword.

He thinks its is easier to remember the time you wrote something than what you wrote. Must be under 50. Basically he is calling upon the computer to do all the work, not you. Of course there are some out there who have never created a folder and just rely on finder (or Sherlock).
