The Digital Projects Librarian chairs the library's Digital Projects Team and will have primary responsibility for building a comprehensive digital initiatives program.

Other position specific accountabilities are as follows: In collaboration with collections managers, identify existing content within the library for digitization; provide leadership in technical planning, technical implementation, management and support of digital collections; seek out new content and new partners for digital initiatives; identify grant and other external support and take the lead in grant writing; design and maintain web presence and interface for digital initiatives program, lead and coordinate usability activities of the program, promote use of LMU's digital collections through classroom demonstrations, in meetings and at professional conferences; manage projects; and serve as LMU's representative to various consortia on shared digital initiatives.

The ideal candidate must have broad knowledge of current trends in higher education, learning technologies, and digital library practices including rights management and preservation. The successful candidate will be a strong project manager demonstrating curiosity about new technologies, collaborative ability, and a strong desire to innovate. Other requirements include: web design and programming experience, knowledge of current metadata schemes and evolving standards, knowledge of a wide variety of media including text, music, still images, audio and video, Familiarity with some or all of these metadata standards: MARC, EAD, TEI, VRA Core, Dublin Core, MODS, and METS. Experience with SGML/XML. Experience with digital asset management systems like CONTENTdm, Dspace, Fedora, or Proquest Digital Commons preferred. Experience conducting formal usability studies preferred. Experience with computer programming and scripting languages such as Javascript, MySQL, and PHP preferred.

A Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution and/or other related graduate degree required. A minimum of one year digital project management experience preferred. Commitment to professional development.

Hiring Salary: $49,338 to $57,144 commensurate with experience and salary history.

OVERVIEW: Provide digital photographic documentation for SAM's collection and exhibitions. Photograph 2D and 3D objects of
varying sizes and surfaces. Color correct and process images at the established museum and UPDIG standards.
FLSA STATUS: Exempt REPORTS TO: Senior Photographer of the Digital Imaging Department
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provide digital documentation of the Museum's art collection for publication.
2. Plan composition and lighting of captures to meet museum standards and assignment objectives.
3. Process digital imaging files for color accuracy, contrast and density. Format images to derivatives for TMS database and
eMuseum.
4. Coordinate shooting schedule with Senior Photographer on behalf of outside constituents, publications and departmental
requests. Consult with cross-departmental co-workers for information for gallery projects and other assignments.
5. Provide on-going architectural and art installation documentation in digital format.
6. Calibrate and profile studio equipment including cameras, printers, and monitors. Maintain photographic equipment in
accordance with department policies. Advise and assist other staff members in use of digital cameras.
7. Research advancements in digital technology for art documentation and image storage to maintain industry best practices.
8. May handle art objects and perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Minimum four (4) years art photography experience in a cultural heritage institutional studio setting.
2. Bachelor's degree in photography and/or equivalent course work in museum studies, art history, or fine arts.
3. Experience with close attention to detail, in high end digital camera systems such as Phase One and equipment in large
and medium format, and studio set ups including electronic strobe, continuous lighting, etc.
4. Extensive digital color correction skills using Macintosh platform computers, Photoshop CS2/CS3, and digital processing
software such as Capture One.
5. Knowledge of professional development and advancements in digital and electronic technology for museum based studio
photography.
6. Experience with museum based databases such as The Museum System (TMS).
7. Excellent interpersonal and oral & written communications skills.
8. Demonstrated proficiency and accuracy in using MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook and other programs.
9. Ability to be flexible and work well independently as well as a part of a small team.
10. Ability to work confidentially with donors, members, the public, and co-workers in a professional manner.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work areas include indoor and outdoor, Museum galleries, warehouses, and closed basement studio environments with light
background noise. Some confined or non HVAC environments.

Vision: 20/20 or corrected vision close 20/20 and color vision (red, green, and blue) are necessary to effectively use the monitors, cameras, and printed materials. SUMMARY (general statement)

In collaboration with the Assistant Manager of Digital Imaging and Photography Services and the Systems Analyst and Applications Developer, prioritizes and schedules the digitization, image processing, metadata generation, and transfer of completed digital reproductions to Harvard's Digital Repository Services.

Operates specialized camera workstations, and film and document scanners to produce high-quality reproductions of library materials; applies digital image processing techniques to adjust tone, color, scale, and to otherwise reformat file data; creates and edits structural, administrative, and technical metadata; uploads and retrieves image files from Harvard DRS; performs and oversees quality assurance procedures; handles irreplaceable objects; undertakes other related duties as directed.

Essential Duties

1. Under the supervision of the Associate Registrar [Manager of Imaging and Rights and Reproductions], and in cooperation with the Photographer, maintain workflow of new digital images from point of capture to archiving and points of access/delivery, including receiving, processing and archiving digital images created by the photographer in the imaging studio, and scanning images from film.
2. Properly edit, organize, archive and/or distribute digital files based on a defined workflow and according to established procedures and standards. Workflow may include organizing images on server(s), ingesting and cataloguing images into a DAM or equivalent, linking/cataloguing images into the media module of TMS and uploading images to one or more digital repositories or image archives or services. Monitor and maintain appropriate storage and archiving procedures.
3. In association with the Photographer, evaluate incoming digital image files for capture quality, neutral/gray balance, color accuracy, sharpness, contrast and density when compared to original objects and accepted standards; edit as appropriate. Assist in maintaining best practices in digital imaging, with a strong understanding of metadata and color management.
4. Verify object identification; verify and enforce file naming conventions and image formatting.
5. Check and enter technical metadata into digital files, TMS media module and/or DAM per established procedure.
6. Digitize color transparencies including scanning, evaluation and editing. Supervise student scanning assistants; provide regular quality control and evaluation of student work.
7. Perform retroactive/routine processing of preexisting and backlogged digital images according to the defined workflow.
8. Monitor and maintain the majority of software and hardware used to capture, edit, copy and save images. Regularly calibrate studio monitors, scanners and printers. Regularly verify color management settings in imaging software. Assist other departments in calibrating hardware and software.
9. Create, duplicate and manipulate digital media and produce match prints as required. Respond quickly to requests for delivery of digital files (via server, FTP or burned to CD/DVD) and highly accurate match/guide prints for printing digital images.
10. Assist department staff in locating images and image metadata when necessary.
11. Consult with the Associate Registrar, Photographer, Information Technology Department and Collections Catalogue Coordinator as necessary to refine existing procedures or resolve issues that may arise.
12. Maintain a current awareness of digital technology and trends, especially within the cultural heritage sector; investigate and report on promising developments, products or procedures. Participate in the planning and implementation of new systems and technologies.
13. Perform additional functions incidental to departmental activities.

Education and Experience

1. Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate’s Degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's Degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Additional Education and Experience

1. Experience in the areas of digital imaging, image collection management or digital archives.
2. Experience with databases and meticulous data entry, and understanding of database concepts.
3. Knowledge of best practices for long term digital image archiving.
4. Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Photography, Digital Imaging, Library or Information Science (MS) or related discipline; experience in a museum, archive and/or library environment; familiarity with cultural heritage information standards; two years experience in the areas of digital imaging, image collection management, digital archives or managing large quantities of digital assets; experience with TMS collection management system; experience with a Digital Asset Management system; pre-press/pre-production experience.

POSITION TITLE: Visual Resources Librarian

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Head of Digital Collections, the Visual Resources Librarian has primary oversight and responsibility for development of the image collection supporting teaching faculty, in particular Northwestern's Art History faculty and ultimately faculty in a variety of other schools and disciplines.

RESPONSIBILITIES: In conjunction with library subject specialists, the Digital Collections department's Outreach and Training Specialist, and the coordinator of digital production, the Visual Resources Librarian is a liaison to faculty, designing intake processes to identify new and existing images needed for teaching, and supporting use of digital images in the classroom. Sets priorities for cataloguing and scanning of images. Assists with management and coordination of access via the Voyager and MDID database systems. Supervises and assists with cataloging and classification of images. Directs maintenance of the physical slide collection and coordinates development of an overall schedule to proactively digitize or digitally re-acquire slides. Actively searches out and recommends purchase of new image sets and related image database subscriptions. Assists faculty, staff and students in the use of the collection, providing reference and research assistance. Participates in planning future digital and technology-related initiatives. Supervises the Visual Media Collection coordinator and the Visual Resources metadata assistant.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or the equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience. Supervisory experience. At least two years experience in a library, museum, or visual resources collection, specializing in information services, collection development, or technical services. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Good technical skills and flexibility to work in a dynamic and changing environment. Preferred: B.A., M.F.A or M.A. in Art or Art History. Knowledge of art history image collection cataloging methods and experience working with digital image databases.
